Whittier. Denver, Colorado.
Look past reminders of modern-day, and it’s easy to imagine this view of the Miller House under construction in the winter of 1901. The snow and ice-packed streets of the Whittier neighborhood take on the look of how roads in the first few days of the 20th century looked, rutty and muddy.
Master stonemason Robert Russell, a Scottish immigrant, completed the impressive structure from rusticated castle rock lava stone in 1902. The extensive use of stone and brick occurred after a city-wide ordinance mandating a move from wooden framed homes after the disastrous Denver City fire of April 19, 1863, that left most of downtown in ashes.
