Live Music
Denver’s live music scene is a rich space for photographers to explore dive bars, historic theaters and mystic venues like Red Rocks.
Bands show here: Widespread Panic, Phil Lesh, Starfucker, Trampled By Turtles, Das Racist, Akron Family, Love Language, Smith Westerns, St. Vincent, Telekinesis, Wye Oak.
Gettysburg, For The New Yorker
Commissioned by The New Yorker to document, for the publication’s Instagram feed, Gettysburg National Battlefield Park during the 150th remembrance of the three days American Civil War battle that raged July 1-3, 1863.
This commission worked in parallel with a personal project that sought to look at our inheritance from the American Civil War as a broader project called The 150 Project.
Since 2011, this project has been revisiting the slaveholder rebellion that led to the American Civil War while encouraging a revitalized interest through multiple platform single-storytelling.

“You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don’t try to forget the mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.” - Johnny Cash
John Prine would tell stories between songs or when he’d reach for a new guitar. The packed audience was completely silent, hanging on every word, listening to a sermon of sorts, Sunday mass for the everyman.
I was recently assigned to walk the Denver burbs for the Los Angeles Times and speak with primary voters and document canvassers. For the first time in 20 years, Colorado is holding a presidential primary instead of caucuses.
The United States maternal death rate is among the highest in the developed world. Eighteen states haven't studied these deaths and others tend to blame moms.
Visitors read the raised bronze letters of the Columbine Memorial plaques in whispers, asking questions to God, survivors, the community, and each other.
Recently assigned by Barcroft Media, I drove south to the small mountain town of Buena Vista, Colorado to link up with Hailey Wait.
Outtakes from a recent assignment for Education Week to document and gather portraits of Overland High School students involved in a program seeking to build and strengthen civil discourse skills.
New photography work published for Education Week. Proud to play a part of a larger initiative that launched in October to help better understand the role of education in the, as many say, current American civics crisis.
My editor at Education Week recently emailed me a handful of PDFs from a long-range project, Citizen Z, I worked on with the publication along with a few assignments.
Thanks for taking a look.
Final Edition. Presses fell silent. Shuttered. February 27, 2009.
